About Mogens Dahl Koncertsal

"Not since The Radio Concert Hall, a new classical venue in Copenhagen has opened, which esthetically and physically welcomes it's guests so well."
- Politiken, January 2006.

The history of Mogens Dahl Koncertsal

The story of Mogens Dahl Koncertsal is the story of one man’s uncompromising ambition to create an alternative concert venue in Copenhagen. A concert hall, where musical life can unfold in perfect intimate settings that bring music closer to the audience and the audience closer to music. A concert hall that stands out from other concert halls by also serving as a multifunctional building in which music can be combined with and influence a special event such as a conference, a showroom or a staff party.

The buildings

The old building was built in 1901 and was originally a horse stable with an associated porter’s lodge for Hertz Printing House in which design company VIPP now has its domicile. The current concert hall is where the horses once where stabled, while the carriages were parked in what is now the foyer of the Concert Hall.

Since the time when horses were outnumbered by cars, the buildings have undergone many changes. They have, among other things, served as a garage extension to the original building as it later became both a paint- and workshop called Amar’kansk Auto. The old garage is now the concert hall’s Small Hall, in which guests can enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine during an intermission.

The architect couple Frank Maali and Gemma Lalanda have restored the buildings back to their original appearance, and thus restored the barn doors that now beautifully frame the glazing that faces the concert hall. The original paving is restored in the foyer creating a fusion between the raw outdoors atmosphere and the warm, intimate hospitality which is the concert hall’s characteristic – dramatized by the beautiful, red staircase that breaks the foyer’s simple appearance.

A glass door binds the foyer and the hall together and leads you into the vast musical space where acoustician Jan Voetmann has created a spacious sound without changing the building’s original appearance. The old gallery is still there, and the large characteristic iron girders that make the backbone of the the building have their own lives and are beautifully integrated into the general expression of the concert hall architecture.

REVIEWS OF THE CONCERT HALL

”In a former car workshop between housing estates and industrial construction Mogens Dahl has built an artistic wedge, which in any sense gives you space above your mind and body. With rare intransigence Mogens Dahl has created an aesthetically beautiful concert hall, which has made Copenhagen – and through the radiotransmitted concerts – Denmark richer.”
